Proposal for a training course "Theater of the oppressed"

03 March to 07 March 2015 (5 days)

About "Theater of The Oppressed"

The Theatre of the Oppressed describes theatrical forms that the Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal first elaborated in the 1960s, initially in Brazil and later in Europe. Boal was influenced by the work of the educator and theorist Paulo Freire. Boal's techniques use theatre as means of promoting social and political change. In the Theatre of the Oppressed, the audience becomes active, such that as "spect-actors" they explore, show, analyse and transform the reality in which they are living. It is a most powerful way for social change and to start mind making process. It breaks silence among the audience.

Major branches of "Theater of the Oppressed" are; Image Theater, Forum Theater, Invisible Theater, etc.

Theater of the Oppressed is an arsenal of theater techniques and games that seeks to motivate people, restore true dialogue, and create space for participants to rehearse taking action. It begins with the idea that everyone has the capacity to act in the “theater” of their own lives; everybody is at once an actor and a spectator. We are “spect-actors!” — a term which Boal coined.

    About the "Clownmunication"

The Clownmunication is an art of living. The purpose is to develop his skills

to get to know oneself and the other.

The Clownmunication is built on imagination, discrepancy, poetry and revolution.

The Clownmunication requires a process of maturation starting from empathy,

to the creation of a new, unpredictable and absolutely positive space: the Clown culture.

Everybody is able to ‘clownmunicate'.

In the Clown theatre we discover and build our own Clown character.

He is born in the theatre 'laboratory', but quickly he makes his first steps

and leaves to get around the world and to improve his Clownmunication.

Growing up, in youth, he disturbs habits, he shakes up certainties,

and he transgresses taboos...

Becoming an adult, the Clown wanders around with the impertinence

of a teen and the eyes of child. He serves others with his naivety hoping

to be part in the creation of a more just world.

Clown ethics

The Clown brings liberty to the being: the actor can embody object, animal,

emotion, any kind of characters. During one improvisation he can change from one character to another and express himself in different ways:

realistic, surrealistic, absurd, normal…

The Clown is a «super communicator»: he uses all capacities and resources

of expression: the body, the voice, the emotions, the gestures...

The Clown is a «revealer of personality»: by mirroring he brings out all aspects

of the personality, and sublimates the «negative» aspects.

The Clown is a «warrior»: there is no taboo for him.

It is a moment of truth that breaks out.

The Clown is a «re-enchanting»: poetic, generous and naive, he helps

to transform the world. Aware of the injustices he gives the keys to reduce them.

The Clown is a «go-between»: helping each person to transpose

a certain 'art of living' in their personal, social and professional life.

Improvisation, based on the Clown’s play

The theme is the subject of the story.

It is the facilitator that gives the themes,

based on what he wants to make the participants explore,

Support for the improvisation

The facilitator helps the person to identify if the improvisation

was 'real' or not; if she was connected with her emotions,

her feelings,her images.

-Help the actor realize what was inherent

to 'the person' to 'the actor' to the 'Clown‘ and to locate

his performance on these three levels.

-Help identify the key points of the improvisation

to see how it worked.

-Help to evaluate how the character of the Clown

has been fed by the experiences of the person.

The guidelines

We chose a specific approach to the Clown, the communication.

In fact, this work is based on our experiences in France and abroad.

We discovered  that the Clown is a great communication trainer

in general, but especially when it gets to intercultural communication..

Every culture has its references, that are shared by the society.

Each person understand this cultural codes and transmits them.

We assume that any situation is more or less intercultural.

Without coming from different  countries, or beliefing in different

religions,we are either male or female, young or old, living in the city

or in the countryside, children of teachers or of soldiers.

With this additional point of view we invite you on your travel with the Clown.

The director

Jean-Pierre Besnard is Director, FORUM THEATRE Joker

and Clown trainer. He intervenes since more than 20 years

in the field of social Clown-Theatre and research in France and abroad.

He developed The Clowning, an original method that combines

the Clown and FORUM THEATRE.
